Sports Drinks vs Water

Sports drinks vs. water, which is better? The answer depends on the effects you’re looking for. Water is essential to hydration. When you quench your thirst with water, you’re restoring your body’s most essential and critical liquid, and you’re not taking in any calories, chemicals, sugar or sodium in the process. Water is the ultimate liquid for hydration, no mater how beverages are marketed. If water is the best hydrator, then why bother with sport drinks? Despite the major marketing claim of superior hydration that’s attached to sports drinks, that is not their real purpose. Sport drinks don’t hydrate better than water, but they will replace lost essentials like electrolytes lost through sweat and calories lost through your body generating heat during a workout. If anything, the electrolytes (salt) in sports drinks can hinder hydration, so if you’re just looking for something to quench your thirst without taking in any extra calories or sodium, you can do just fine with water. If you’re getting such a workout that you are sweating out electrolytes and loosing calories at an accelerated rate, that a sports drink will benefit your performance more than water.
